2009 Accomplishments

GRD’s ACHIEVEMENTS

    • Hosted a very successful El Paso Days in Austin 2009.
    • Hosted a very successful State of the City Luncheon and Keynote Address
    • Developed federal and state legislative agendas.
    • Grew El Paso Healthcare Heroes to serve nearly 240 uninsured patients.
      Dr. Jose Luna has been selected by the Texas Medical Board to represent Texas for the Kanter Prize, which is awarded to a physician who is committed to addressing disparities in healthcare. 
    • Hosted the Public Service Board to discuss the storm water district.
    • Review the management and operations’ financial statements and operating budget as part of an accountability and oversight process.
    • Reaffirmed the Chamber’s support for the storm water district and encouraged voters to vote for the creation of the storm water district and the PSB’s oversight of it.
    • Healthcare Council members testified in Austin in support of the Chamber’s physician licensing bills.  Senate Bill 202 was voted into law and provides a provisional license for those waiting for final approval by the Texas Medical Board.
    • Passed a resolution in Support of the Citizens Commission for Ethics Reform.
    • Armed Forces AUSA – Chamber adopted the 1st Armor Division.
    • Passed a resolution in support of the 2030 Committee’s transportation study.
    • Produced a Voter Guide with El Paso Times that circulated to 80,000 Sunday subscribers to the El Paso Times.
    • Supported the Armed Forces Division in its advocacy efforts.
    • Housing incentives have been approved by the City to help address the housing needs for BRAC
    • Military Housing Forum to discuss possibilities here in El Paso regarding the El Paso Housing Shortage.
    • Hosted a mayoral forum prior to the local elections.
    • Took action on tax abatement policy of the Thomason Hospital Board of Managers.
    • Strategically planned to include Education and Workforce Development as part of GRD’s advocacy efforts.
    • Hosted House Transportation Committee Chairman Joe Pickett in a dialogue with transportation stakeholders and Chamber members.
    • Hosted Breakfast with Texas Transportation Commissioner Ted Houghton on transportation issues.
    • Hosted City Manager Joyce Wilson for a presentation on the City of El Paso’s Budget for the 2010 Fiscal Year.
    • Reviewed and reaffirmed the Chamber’s position on annexation.
    • Hosted John Wagner and Bradd Skinner from Customs and Border Protection for a candid discussion with stakeholders on “Trusted Traveler” initiatives.
    • Hosted Assistant Secretary Alan Bersin to discuss border affairs with key stakeholders.
    • Chamber CEO appointed to Secretary Napolitano’s Southwest Border Security Task Force.
    • Created the Joint Border Affairs & Trade Committee.
    • Supported the Border Security Conference held by Congressman Reyes.
    • Hosted a very successful State of the Military Luncheon and Keynote Address.
    • Hosted a very successful reception in Austin for the Texas Transportation Commission. 
    • Hosted the members of the State Delegation for a discussion regarding the 81st Legislative Session to develop legislative priorities for the next session.
    • Led a very successful community advocacy trip to D.C. (TEAM El Paso) in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Association of the United States Army. 
    • Passed a resolution identifying our support for certain aspects of proposed healthcare reform and listed business concerns that should be addressed in the development of healthcare policy reform.
    • Hosted the Texas Medical Board and Texas Nursing Board symposium on licensing issues.
    • Hosted community stakeholders for a special meeting to discuss mental health issues; advocated before Commissioner’s Court for additional funding for mental health to prevent the implementation of a wait-list.
    • Supported community outreach efforts to small businesses regarding a proposed three-share program for El Paso.
    • Passed a resolution urging support for Proposition 4 on the November ballot for tier-one funding, wrote an op-ed piece in the El Paso Times expressing the Chamber’s support and hosted a press conference with our state delegation and Dr. Natalicio in support of Prop 4.
    • Submitted $4.6M grant proposal for stimulus funding to support the faculties and clinical rotations of nursing schools in El Paso.
