El Paso Chamber Kicks Off “The Week Ahead in Austin” Series with Speaker Pro Tempore Joe Moody and Senator César Blanco
On February 12, 2021, the El Paso Chamber hosted the first installment of “The Week Ahead in Austin,” a new weekly series that previews the policy work happening during the Texas State Legislature’s session. During these events, attendees have the opportunity to hear first-hand updates about legislation and to ask questions. This week’s event featured Speaker Pro Tempore of the Texas House Joe Moody and State Senator César Blanco.
“Every single day that I do this job, I am grateful. But today is one of those days where I really love the work,” El Paso Chamber President and CEO David Jerome said. “This is a chance for us, as a Chamber, to connect our members with some of our most esteemed elected officials.”
Friday’s event covered general topics like committee assignments, redistricting, and bipartisanship. More specific discussions included Governor Abbott’s emergency items, expanding broadband and internet access, changing the bail system, funding for the Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine, local funding on law enforcement, and civil liability protections.
“[As a delegation], we have a seat at the table for every single conversation, which is all we’ve ever asked for. Now we have to make the most out of it,” said Speaker Moody.
“My hope and expectation for this session remains the same – that we tackle the major issues facing our state” Senator Blanco said. “The kitchen-table issues families care about.”
Speaker Moody and Senator Blanco closed their remarks by addressing the ongoing challenges presented by the pandemic but ultimately offered a message of hope, sharing that El Paso leads the effort in COVID-19 vaccinations in Texas.
“The Week Ahead in Austin” series will be hosted every Friday at 10 AM MST until the end of the 87th Legislative Session. The series is exclusively for El Paso Chamber members. To RSVP or become a member, email Taylor Sanchez at [email protected]
